Cye Strowman, 97, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2026, at his home in Kingston, NH.
Born on July 9, 1928, in Chelsea, MA, he was the son of Joseph and Beatrice Strowman, and brother of Jerry Strowman. He was formerly married to the late Arlene Chasin, with whom he raised his daughters, Shelley and Cindy Strowman.
Cye spent most of his life in the Boston area. He served in the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. For most of his career, he worked as a clothing salesman, known for his personable nature and ability to connect with others.
He loved outdoor sports, including sailing, swimming, tennis, and skiing, which he enjoyed teaching his daughters. He also had a deep passion for chess. At a Boston chess club, he founded a program to teach children. He often played chess in Harvard Square among a vibrant community of players.
After retiring, Cye moved to Mesa, AZ, to enjoy the warm weather and swim daily. He later returned to Brighton, MA to be near family. He drove cross-country, on his own, at 80 years old.
In his later years, he was supported by several devoted aides whose care went above and beyond, and with whom he formed close friendships.
He approached life with intellectual curiosity, especially in math and science, and had a zest for lifelong learning. He will be remembered for his wit, warmth, and humor.
He is survived by his daughters; extended family; and friends.
Donations in his memory may be made to the US Chess Federation or the American Heart Association.
